Salman Khan's great-grandfather was an Alokozai Pashtun from Afghanistan who immigrated to British India in the mid-1800's from Indore, Indore (now in Madhya Pradesh), British India. However, Jassim Khan says in his actor's biography that his ancestors belonged to the Akozai tribe of Yousafzai Pashtuns from Malakand in the Swat valley of the North West Frontier Province, British India (now Pakhtunkhwa, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). His grandfather Abdul Rashid Khan was the Deputy Inspector General of Indore State who was awarded the Holkar Warrior Award.
Khan’s mother is a family, his father Baldev Singh Charak, Dogra Rajput, comes from Jammu and Kashmir and his mother comes from Maharashtra.
Khan speaks Hindi and English as well as Marathi. He has two brothers, Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan. And two sisters, Alvira Khan Agnihotri, who is married to actor / director Atal Agnihotri, and a foster sister, Arpita.

Previously, he studied with his younger brother Arbaaz for several years at Cindia School in Gwalior.
He was educated at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, but dropped out.
